About this board game
The Battle of White Plains: Twilight of the New York Campaign October 28th–31st, 1776 is a two-player game with an approximately 480-minute play time, covering the final field battle of the 1776 New York Campaign.
As General Howe, seek a decisive breakthrough against the American line. As General Washington, try to preserve the army and hold strong ground despite the uncertain quality of a militia force that makes up 46% of the American army.
Volume 10 in GMT’s Battles of the American Revolution series offers three scenarios:
- The historical fight for Chatterton Hill.
- An October 31 scenario exploring what might have happened if Howe had launched his planned grand assault.
- A four-day campaign beginning with the British army’s arrival on October 28 and ending at 5:00 pm on October 31, spanning 42 game turns.
Each player receives 26 Opportunity Cards divided among three decks, adding variability and historical flavor. Special rules address the battle’s distinctive circumstances, including American sortie restrictions, tactical doctrine, rain game turns, army morale, scorched earth, and the limitations of American militia.
Players must also contend with American fieldwork construction and an off-board movement system for Tarrytown on the Hudson River, seven miles away, where British ships are anchored. Even Washington’s combat prowess at this early stage of the war is randomized.
In The Battle of White Plains, managing two large armies means balancing pressure, terrain, morale, weather, and uncertain troop quality across four demanding days.
