About this board game
Sovereign Chess is a two-player chess variant played on a 16×16 board, with an approximate play time of 120 minutes. Released in 2018, it expands traditional chess with neutral pieces in multiple colors around the edge of the board.
Each player begins with a normal complement of chess pieces: one player is black, and the other is white. Most moves follow the rules of traditional chess, but the larger board introduces a distinctive change to pawn movement.
- Board: A 16×16 playing area surrounded by multiple colors of neutral pieces.
- Control: A piece on a colored square controls the pieces of that color.
- Objective: Checkmate the opposing king.
Pawns may move orthogonally toward the center of the board and capture diagonally. This variation gives pawn movement a different relationship with the board’s central area while retaining the familiar goal and foundations of chess.
Control can extend beyond a single color. A player may control multiple colors through several of their own pieces, or by creating a chain of pieces. For example, if the white player places a pawn on a red square, then moves a red pawn to a blue square, the white player controls both red and blue.
In Sovereign Chess, positioning therefore determines more than the movement of a player’s own army. Pieces placed on colored squares can bring additional neutral pieces under control, creating connections across the board while both players work toward the same decisive aim: checkmating the opposing king.
