About this board game

Danube 20: The Battles of Aspern-Essling & Wagram 1809 is a Napoleonic battle game for 1–2 players, playable in about 60 minutes. It covers two critical clashes fought across the Danube from Vienna during the War of the Fifth Coalition.

Napoleon’s first attempt to force a crossing of the Danube, at Aspern-Essling, ended in a crushing French defeat. After spending a month and a half preparing a larger assault, he returned to the same area for Wagram, where the French defeated the Austrians without achieving the decisive result Napoleon wanted.

This Twin game combo lets players examine both battles and experience their contrasting circumstances. The game uses a low unit density of twenty or fewer pieces, modest complexity, and fast-playing turns focused on the dramatic parry-and-thrust of a grand Napoleonic engagement.

  • Story-driven random event cards introduce the friction of war and create operational pauses.
  • Army morale helps determine which side will break first as the armies close to bayonet-point.
  • Each unit represents one corps, each hex covers approximately 1,200 meters, and turns represent roughly 3.5 daylight hours or 8 hours at night.

Danube 20 emphasizes historical narrative without requiring a highly complex rules system. With complexity and solitaire suitability both rated 5 on a 9-point scale, it offers a focused way to explore how preparation, battlefield pressure, and morale shaped these major battles of 1809.
