About this board game
Drive on Stalingrad (Second Edition) is a strategic-level simulation for 2–4 players, covering Germany’s 1942 offensive toward Stalingrad and the Caucasus and the Soviet counter-offensive that followed.
The main scenario begins on 28 June 1942 with Operation Blue. The German player takes the offensive, seeking victory by capturing key areas on the map, while the Soviet player is primarily on the defensive. This scenario runs for 11 weekly turns and ends on 15 September.
A second scenario begins on 19 November 1942 with the Soviet launch of Operation Uranus. Across six weekly turns, the Soviet player can conduct a full counter-offensive, continuing through the end of December as the historical German attempt to relieve the encircled 6th Army at Stalingrad ground to a halt.
- Scale: one game turn represents one week, and each hex represents 16 miles or 26 kilometers.
- Units: formations range from divisions to corps.
- Scenarios: play the German advance in Operation Blue or the Soviet counter-offensive in Operation Uranus.
- Playability: high solitaire playability and medium complexity.
The second edition includes two full-color 22 × 34-inch mapsheets, two dual-sided countersheets containing 420 half-inch counters, a 24-page rulebook, and one six-sided die. The official description lists playing time at 6–20 hours, while the BoardGameGeek listing gives a 120-minute play time.
Released in 2002, Drive on Stalingrad offers a focused examination of a pivotal Eastern Front campaign, with opposing players facing different strategic situations across its two scenarios.
