About this board game

12 Hours at Maleme is a 1–2-player wargame with a 180-minute play time, simulating the battle for Maleme airfield in Crete on May 20, 1941.

One player commands the 1st Air Landing Assault Regiment from the German 7th Air Division, while the other leads the 22nd New Zealand Infantry Battalion from the 2nd New Zealand Division. The struggle centers on control of Maleme airfield and the all-important Allied position on Hill 107.

This is a tense, one-day fight built around alternating unit activations. Players take turns activating units, choosing how best to pursue victory or prevent the opposing side from securing key positions.

  • Move an activated unit into position.
  • Fire at one or more opposing units.
  • Attempt to remove a pinned or regroup condition.
  • Use available HQ actions to expand tactical options.

After one side completes an activation, the other player acts, keeping both commanders involved throughout the battle. Decisions must balance immediate attacks, movement, recovery, and the need to contest crucial ground.

The game’s time pressure is tied directly to its dice rolls. Every time a 6 is rolled when a unit fires or attempts a refit action, the clock advances by 30 minutes. As the hours pass, the moment when one side will withdraw from the battlefield draws nearer.

In 12 Hours at Maleme, control of the airfield and Hill 107 depends on making the most of every activation while managing the conditions affecting your units. The result is a focused contest over key positions, shaped by alternating actions, HQ support, combat rolls, and an advancing clock.
