About this board game

The Art of Siege is a 1978 two-player board game with an approximately 240-minute play time, featuring four major siege battles from different periods of military history.

Each battle is played on its own comprehensively illustrated map, depicting the actual siege area and its fortifications. Colorful cardboard playing pieces move, position themselves, and engage according to the particular nuances of each battle’s movement system.

  • Acre: Richard the Lionhearted’s arrival signals the end of the Saracens’ two-year defense during the Third Crusade.
  • Tyre: Alexander the Great undertakes the first large-scale amphibious assault in history.
  • Lille: The greatest star fortress in France is taken by the Anglo-Dutch-German Confederation.
  • Sevastopol: Ingenious Russian fortifications during the Crimean War require one year of continuous bombardment before the city is taken.

Combat is resolved with simple probability charts that reveal each engagement’s outcome. This keeps the focus on positioning, movement, and the distinct tactical challenges presented by each siege scenario.

The Art of Siege offers four self-contained battles in a single historical wargaming package, with maps and systems tailored to the character of each conflict. The Strategy & Tactics magazine game The Siege of Constantinople is considered by some to be the fifth quad game of the set.
