About this board game
Streets of Stalingrad is a two-player World War 2 East Front wargame about the fight for Stalingrad in September and October 1942, with games lasting about 180 minutes. It models the battle at company level, using daily turns and a scale of 300 meters per hex.
The game’s three large maps are based directly on aerial photographs, showing Stalingrad block by block and individual buildings outside the city. Their restrained colors keep attention on the terrain, while remaining highly functional for play. Terrain effects are also illustrated with photographs, offering a vivid sense of the conditions faced by the soldiers.
With 2,160 counters, Streets of Stalingrad is a substantial game, but its scenarios make the experience adaptable. Some use a single map or only part of one, allowing players to tailor the game to their available time and space. Separate setup sheets for each side, miniature scenario maps, sorting labels, and ziplock bags help make preparation straightforward.
- Detailed orders of battle researched over many years
- Three aerial-photo maps covering the battlefield
- Multiple scenarios for different time and space requirements
- Basic and advanced rules, including a rulebook for each player in the basic game
- Player aids with photographs of unit types and terrain
The counters use the actual designations of the separate armies rather than familiar American-style unit labels. This adds historical character, while the large player aids help clarify the unit types. The included rulebooks are detailed, example-rich, and designed to address ambiguities without making the core mechanics unnecessarily difficult.
Although the scale and component count create a demanding undertaking, the game is mechanically accessible to players with some wargaming experience. Its extensive research, photographic presentation, and careful supporting materials make Streets of Stalingrad a distinctive depiction of one of World War 2’s most intense urban battles.
