About this board game
Wordthief is a 2–4-player word-building game that takes about 45 minutes to play. Players form words from dealt cards, each showing a letter and a suit, in a Scrabble-style challenge where completed words can change hands.
Players create words from their cards and score with poker-style chips. The central twist is that words are not necessarily safe once they have been formed: another player may be able to take an entire opponent’s word and use it to make one or more new words.
Successfully stealing a word earns the new owner additional points, while the previous owner loses points. This gives every word a potential second life and makes the arrangement of letters especially important as players look for ways to rebuild what is already on the table.
- Word building: Form words from cards marked with letters and suits.
- Word stealing: Take an opponent’s entire word when you can create new word or words from it.
- Scoring shifts: The thief gains additional points while the previous owner loses points.
- Locked words: A word made entirely from one suit becomes unstealable.
The suit system adds a distinctive choice to each word. A mixed-suit word may remain vulnerable to a clever rearrangement, while using cards from a single suit can protect a creation by locking it.
Released in 1994, Wordthief combines familiar word formation with changing ownership and poker-style scoring chips. Its blend of Scrabble-like construction and stealable words creates a compact contest in which both making words and protecting them matter.
