About this board game

Stalingrad Roads: Battle on the Edge of the Abyss is a two-player wargame about the Soviet encirclement and defeat of the Axis forces besieging Stalingrad in the winter of 1942–43, with a listed play time of 300 minutes.

The game includes a learning scenario and four main scenarios. The full campaign begins with Operation Uranus and concludes with Von Manstein’s Backhand Blow counter-attack, while shorter scenarios can be completed in an evening.

As the third title in the Roads series, Stalingrad Roads shares its predecessors’ supply, command, and Führer Approval mechanics. It also introduces new perspectives on the campaign, including mandatory offensives, the loss of Soviet momentum, Stavka reserves, and German Superiority that declines as the Soviets achieve victories.

  • Highly variable weather that can affect operations
  • HQ-based supply, making nearby headquarters vital to unit survival
  • No zones of control when moving
  • Punishing combat that reflects the campaign’s terrible attrition
  • Support counters and careful positioning to exploit breakthroughs

Von Manstein helps secure German reinforcements against the wilder impulses of the Führer, adding another layer to the Axis struggle. The game rewards timing, positioning, and thoughtful use of limited support at critical moments.

The box contains a 28-page rule and scenario book, a folded 34-by-23.75-inch map, 560 half-inch counters, and fourteen player aids. Stalingrad Roads is also suitable for solo play and online play using Vassal.
