About this board game

Death of an Army: Ypres 1914 is a two-player, 600-minute brigade- and regiment-level simulation of the First Battle of Ypres.

Players assume the roles of the commanders of the German and Allied troops, locked in a desperate fight for a valuable position in the line. The battle places opposing armies in a final bid to gain the upper hand during the opening months of the First World War.

The Battle of the Marne had already signaled the failure of the Schlieffen Plan and German hopes for a quick, decisive victory. In its aftermath, the Race for the Sea began as the opposing armies attempted to outflank each other.

Against this backdrop, German and Allied armies clashed at Ypres. The struggle brought the British Expeditionary Force—the professional army of Britain, and described as the strongest army on the Continent—into one of the defining battles of the campaign.
