About this board game

The Conquerors: The Romans and The Macedonians is a two-player strategic and tactical simulation with an approximately 240-minute playing time, released in 1977. It explores the eastward expansion of the Roman Republic after the Second Punic War, which ended in 200 B.C.

The game focuses on two distinct historical periods involving Rome. In the Second Macedonian War, Rome faces Philip V and lays claim to control of Greece while acting in a somewhat defensive posture. In the Syrian War, Rome confronts Antiochus, the Seleucid king, and makes its first incursions into the Asian continent.

These two Roman scenarios provide different perspectives on the republic’s expansion beyond the western Mediterranean. The Syrian War scenario uses both maps included in The Conquerors: the map of The Romans together with the map of The Macedonians.

  • Second Macedonian War: Rome’s conflict with Philip V and its claim for control of Greece.
  • Syrian War: Rome’s war against Antiochus and its first incursions into Asia, using both game maps.
  • Macedonian scenario: The conquests of Alexander the Great.

Alongside Rome’s historical campaigns, The Conquerors presents the Macedonian experience through the conquests of Alexander the Great. Together, the scenarios cover major episodes in the expansion of Roman and Macedonian power, making the game a focused historical study of conquest across Greece and Asia.
