For centuries, the Republic of Venice held predominance in the Adriatic Sea, known as the Gulf of Venice under its jurisdiction. The Archduke of Austria, a Habsburg ruler with broad autonomy over territories including Styria, Carinthia, Carniola, and part of Friuli, repeatedly challenged Venetian influence.

The immediate pressure came from the Uskoks, Catholic corsairs serving the Habsburgs. Their increasingly persistent raids from the Kvarner Gulf against Venetian routes prompted Venice to launch a long and bloody war along its eastern borders and in Istria. Its aims were to end the raids, defeat the Austrian challenge, and recover the fortress of Gradisca.

On the game table, the conflict is shaped by uncertainty. Units are activated in an unpredictable sequence, making campaign outcomes difficult to anticipate and helping each play develop differently. This mechanism captures the instability of military operations while supporting replayability.
