About this board game

Pleasant Hill: The Red River Campaign is a two-player American Civil War simulation of the April 1864 battle of Pleasant Hill, with an approximate playing time of 300 minutes. First published in Strategy & Tactics magazine #106, it is the seventh game in the Great Battles of the American Civil War series.

The Union Army was advancing up the Red River valley toward Shreveport when a smaller Confederate force overran it at Mansfield. The Union troops then retreated to nearby Pleasant Hill and adopted a defensive posture. On April 9, the Confederates attacked, creating the central situation represented in this detailed historical game.

Each game-turn covers 20 minutes of real time, while each hex measures approximately 125 yards from hexside to hexside. A Strength Point represents 100 men or one gun, giving the map and counters a defined scale for following the battle.

More than 20 pages of rules cover the major systems needed to portray the engagement. Players manage formations and resolve combat while accounting for cavalry, artillery, line of sight, morale, fire, and melee.

  • A 22-by-34-inch mapsheet
  • 200 counters
  • Standard Great Battles series rules
  • Exclusive rules and player charts and tables

Victory in Pleasant Hill: The Red River Campaign is determined by points gained for eliminating or demoralizing units and capturing specified geographical objectives. The difference between the Union and Confederate scores establishes the level of victory, rewarding players who balance battlefield pressure with control of important locations.
