About this board game
Sponsio is a family-strategy trick-taking game for 3–4 players that plays in about 45 minutes. Set in the world of gladiatorial battles, it challenges players to plan their scoring, place wagers, and make the most of every trick.
Each round begins with four turns for every player to establish personal goals for the trick-taking phase. Betting is at the heart of the game, but the available wagers cover more than simply taking a certain number of tricks. You may bet on the number of tricks you will win, the number of cards of a particular color in your takes, the last trick, or the highest card that takes a trick.
You can even bet on an opponent’s failure. However, only successful bets earn coins, and each bet has different odds, paying x2, x3, x4, or x5. With up to four bets available, choosing what to pursue—and what to leave alone—is central to building a strong score.
- Change one of your cards.
- Double an odd.
- Become the starting player for the trick phase.
- Change one of your bets.
These alternatives create the tactical depth of Sponsio. Rather than committing to another wager, you can adjust your cards, improve an existing opportunity, influence turn order, or revise a bet that no longer suits your plans. The strongest plays come from combining these actions with carefully timed tricks.
Victory can be achieved in two ways: collect 30 coins or win 9 bets in a row. With multiple routes to success and changing goals each round, Sponsio rewards players who can judge risk, exploit the odds, and turn clever preparation into a winning performance.
