The game was released in 2002. In 2007, Out of the Box changed its name from Apples to Apples Junior 9+ to Apples to Apples Junior. The earlier Junior 9+ edition was sold in a smaller box containing 288 cards, while the renamed edition was changed to a larger box containing 576 cards.

This naming change also helps distinguish it from Apples to Apples Kids, which was formerly called Apples to Apples Junior! before the Junior 9+ edition adopted the name Apples to Apples Junior.
