About this board game
War of the Suns: The War of Resistance 1937-1945 is a historically researched wargame for 1-4 players, covering the China-India-Burma theatre of World War II over playing times ranging from 5 to 34 hours. It recreates the conflict from July 1937 through August 1945 across China, Burma, Assam in India, and parts of Thailand and Indochina.
Players may take the roles of Japan, Kuomintang China, the Chinese Communist Party, and the British Commonwealth. The game combines military operations with political decision-making, reflecting a theatre where warlords, minor countries, foreign routes, and competing Chinese factions could dramatically affect the course of the war.
Its HQ activation system determines which formations can move and when. Command points, headquarters quality, China’s access to foreign routes, and random factors all influence activation. Chinese forces also use a distinctive replacement system, dividing KMT units into elite, standard, and local formations based on their equipment and supply.
- Political Affiliation: Warlords and minor countries can shift allegiance under different conditions.
- Guerrilla warfare: CCP, KMT, and British forces can establish bases and conduct specialized guerrilla actions.
- Optional rules: Explore wartime atrocities, opium production, Japanese collaborators, and alternate-history possibilities.
War of the Suns includes campaign play and multiple scenarios, from the Shanghai fighting in Fist of Fury to the Imphal area in Double Gamble and the 1944-45 Operation Ichi-Go. The game includes three large maps, an overlay, ten countersheets, a rulebook, a playbook, player aids, and dice.
