About this board game

A Glorious Chance: The Naval Struggle for Lake Ontario in the War of 1812 is a solitaire board wargame for one player, with an approximate play time of 240 minutes. Take command of either the U.S. or British naval squadron during the critical summer of 1813.

You have four months to dominate Lake Ontario while protecting your own squadron from destruction. Every patrol, convoy mission, and amphibious landing can bring you into full-scale battle with the AI squadron, where the outcome may leave your fleet triumphant or shattered within hours.

The game features a dynamic, card-driven AI opponent that assigns enemy missions, refits and launches new ships, and plots raids against supply routes and coastlines. Its strategic objectives and battle tactics react to your decisions, creating an unfolding campaign in which every move can change the situation on the lake.

To pursue victory, you must make operational decisions across the campaign:

  • Assign ships to missions and zones.
  • Scout and shadow enemy forces to identify them.
  • Intercept detected enemy squadrons.
  • Conduct amphibious assaults.
  • Attack and defend supply convoys.

Your objective is to control Lake Ontario by the end of the summer campaign without losing your squadron. The tension comes from balancing aggressive operations against the risk of a decisive engagement with an opponent that continually responds to your strategy.

Designed as both a board wargame and a VASSAL module, A Glorious Chance offers an operational age-of-sail experience below monster-game scale, playable in approximately four hours and requiring no specialized knowledge of ship-handling or period tactics. The summer 1813 naval struggle on Lake Ontario receives a focused treatment rarely seen in wargaming, rather than appearing only as part of a full-war strategic game or a small scenario in a broader tactical naval game.
