About this board game

Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is a strategic-level board wargame for exactly four players, with games lasting about 120 minutes.

Set across a map of the Ancient world, the game represents forces that contributed to the breakup of the Roman Empire. Each player commands counters representing peoples or armies, moving them across the map and engaging opposing units in conflict.

The four sides are Rome, the Goths, the Huns, and the Vandals. Their strengths and units are asymmetrical, giving each side a distinct position within the struggle. Through strategic movement, conflict, and diplomacy, every player seeks to achieve their own goals.

  • Four competing sides with asymmetrical strengths and units
  • Strategic movement across a map of the Ancient world
  • Conflict and diplomacy as central parts of play
  • A 15-turn structure representing roughly 75 years

A complete game lasts 15 turns, and each full turn represents about five years of real time. Every turn is divided into four player-turns, with each player-turn containing three main stages: movement, conflict, and movement again.

This structure gives Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire a broad strategic scope while keeping the action organized around successive player turns. The balance between military activity, positioning, and diplomacy places each faction in a changing contest for its objectives.
