About this board game

Duel in the Dark (Second Edition) is a World War II nighttime air-combat board game for 1–2 players. The game has a listed play time of 60 minutes, while each night takes approximately 30–45 minutes to resolve.

As the British Bomber Command player, secretly plot the bomber’s course through the darkness and plan attacks intended to undermine civilian morale in German cities. A Mosquito can serve as an escort or decoy, adding another layer to the bomber’s approach.

As the German Luftwaffe player, defend the target with ace squadrons and an organized civil defense. Try to determine where the bomber is heading, then manage fuel efficiently to make as many attacks on it as possible. The gameboard supports countless variations of these historic nighttime raids.

Weather and battlefield conditions shape every mission. Depending on the scenario and rules in use, players contend with full moon and new moon effects, clouds, thunderclouds, fog, flak, searchlights, balloon barriers, and target markers. Easy-entry rules make it possible to get into the action, while advanced rules offer additional depth for experienced wargamers.

The Second Edition includes nine expansions, providing additional options for both sides:

  • Ju88 Night Fighter
  • Railroad Flak (x2)
  • Acoustic Mirror
  • Quad Flak
  • Skilled Gun Crew
  • The Walls Have Ears
  • 3–5 Player Variant
  • British 3.7in QF Anti-Aircraft Gun
  • British Searchlight

With its hidden route planning, fuel management, changing conditions, and opposing British and German objectives, Duel in the Dark focuses on the strategic and tactical decisions required to survive the night.
