About this board game

Hannut: France 1940 is a two-player operational-level wargame simulation of the Battle of Hannut in Belgium, fought from 12 to 14 May 1940.

The battle took place during the Battle of Belgium and was the largest tank battle in the campaign. At the time, it was also the largest clash of tanks in armored warfare history, making this a focused simulation of a significant early World War II engagement.

Hannut: France 1940 uses a simplified version of the Grand Operational Simulation Series (GOSS) rules. The system depicts World War II combat at the battalion level, presenting the battle through a structured operational framework.

  • Scale: Each map hex represents one mile from side to opposite side.
  • Units: Forces are represented by battalions and companies.
  • Turn structure: Each AM and PM turn covers approximately one-half of the available daylight hours.
  • Night turns: Dedicated night game turns extend through the hours of darkness.

This time structure captures the changing rhythm of the battle across daylight and darkness, while the map scale and unit sizes keep the focus on operational movement and combat. The result is a game built around the historical confrontation at Hannut rather than a broad campaign covering the entire Battle of Belgium.

Released in 2021, Hannut: France 1940 offers two players a concise way to explore this pivotal 12–14 May battle through a streamlined interpretation of the GOSS system.
