About this board game

Fathom is a tile-laying, pattern-building game for 2–4 players, with expeditions lasting about 60 minutes. Set around a fictional island, it casts players as marine biology teams exploring an uncharted underwater ecosystem where time is limited and every decision matters.

Across six rounds of simultaneous play, guide your team’s boat and submersible through the ocean. Scan unmapped depths and place tiles representing signs of marine life, then descend into the darkness to reveal the remarkable creatures hidden below.

Choosing what to investigate is crucial. The creatures you leave unexplored may be discovered by opposing teams, creating pressure to pursue promising discoveries before someone else reaches them. Careful planning and smart decisions can make the difference between a productive expedition and a missed opportunity.

At the end of the game, your discoveries score according to each species’ individual criteria. Some creatures thrive in a homogeneous environment, while others benefit from diversity. Certain species prefer solitary life, whereas others are safest when surrounded by a group.
