About this board game
All Quiet on the Western Front is a traditional hex-based World War I wargame for 1–2 players, with an estimated play time of 1,800 minutes. Designed by Ted Raicer and released in 1997, it focuses on the early 1918 struggle between Germany and the Allies as trench warfare stood on the verge of a major transformation.
The game presents a pivotal moment in the conflict. Germany had emerged from a decisive victory in the East against Tsarist Russia, while the Allies welcomed fresh U.S. troops. German Stosstruppen tactics and the arrival of the Royal Tank Corps promised new military doctrines, with both sides seeking to break the national will of the other.
As a traditional hex wargame, All Quiet on the Western Front addresses the factors that shaped the outcome of the war without avoiding its difficult subject matter. Players contend with national morale, supply, and command and control alongside the distinctive tactical developments of 1918.
- Operation Michael — an introductory scenario
- Ludendorff Attacks
- Allied Counteroffensive
- 1918 — the 30-hour campaign game
These four scenarios offer different ways to examine the German offensives, the Allied response, and the changing character of World War I warfare. The design is part of Ted Raicer’s broader series of World War I games, including Paths of Glory and Clash of Giants, which helped return the conflict to the wargaming map.
