About this board game

Cuius Regio: The Thirty Years War is a two-player operational military game about the campaigns, maneuvers, and battles of the Thirty Years War, with a listed play time of 360 minutes.

Beginning with the Defenestration of Prague in 1618, the game explores the warfare that shook Europe for three decades. Players can choose from scenarios focused on the Bohemian Revolt, the Danish intervention, the Swedish intervention, and the French intervention.

A full campaign covers 31 turns from 1618 to 1648, while shorter scenarios can be played in as little as an hour and a half. Each scenario has its own character, allowing the game to support both brief engagements and a multi-session campaign.

  • Variable turn duration: The length of each turn depends on the number of armies on the map and how those armies are employed.
  • Operational choices: Armies may conduct operations several times in a turn, but repeated activity makes them progressively less effective.
  • Integrated combat: Field battles and sieges use the same combat system.
  • Battle resolution: A die roll is modified by leadership, army composition, and condition before being resolved on a simple Battle Results Table.

These systems place military operations at the center of play, requiring players to manage when and how armies are committed. Frequent operations can create opportunities, but reduced effectiveness adds an important cost to continued activity.

With scenarios spanning the major interventions of the conflict and a complete Thirty Years War campaign, Cuius Regio offers a focused examination of this pivotal period through army movement, field battles, and sieges.
