About this board game

Quissama is a board game for 2–4 players that plays in about 45 minutes. Set in Rio de Janeiro in 1868, it combines card play, territory building, character selection, and direct rivalry.

Quissama is a fugitive slave from the Guaiamum malta who relies on the English detective Woodruff to help find his missing mother, Bernardina. While Alemão and his malta pursue him, Araújo seeks to make his business prosper and Alencar watches political influence. At court, the Princess wants to set slaves free, while the Emperor uses his power as he pleases.

Choose your characters and take part in this turbulent plot. Across the squares of Rio de Janeiro, capoeira fighting between Nagoas and Guaiamuns reflects the divisions of the time.

To develop your position, draw, combine, and use cards to establish your territory. Place your meeples and use coins to open trades, free slaves, and employ capoeiras. Certain card combinations can also give you the right to choose a character.

  • Establish territory in Rio de Janeiro through card combinations.
  • Use coins to open trades, free slaves, and employ capoeiras.
  • Choose characters and pursue one of their goals.
  • Watch for malta attacks, ministers, and character theft from your opponents.

Other players can disrupt your plans with malta attacks against your territory, deploy your ministers, or steal characters you worked hard to win. Navigate scandals and the power of money, then be the first to reach one of your chosen characters’ goals to win the match.
