About this board game

Atlantic Sentinels: North Atlantic Convoy Escort, 1942-43 is a solitaire tactical game for 1–2 players, with a full career taking 6–8 hours. You command an escort group protecting Allied convoys from U-boats during the height of the North Atlantic threat.

Each mission places you in the role of the Senior Officer of the Escort. Your group typically includes 4–10 escort vessels guarding a convoy of around 40–60 merchant ships. Your objective is to preserve as much shipping as possible while destroying as many U-boats as you can.

Convoy defense demands careful positioning. You must assign escorts to provide front, rear, and flank protection, while deciding where to place ships equipped with Type 271 radar. U-boats may attack individually or as wolfpacks, creating a constant challenge as you respond to threats across the abstract map.

  • Choose from 9 historical Escort Groups: five British and four Canadian.
  • Command historical destroyers and corvettes.
  • Receive possible upgrades including additional radar, HF/DF equipment, and ships.
  • Manage the dangers of the Atlantic, including the high-threat central “Black Pit.”

Air support can become vital, but the Black Pit remains especially dangerous until CVE “jeep carriers” arrive. The game is designed for missions lasting approximately 15–20 minutes, while a complete career links the experience into a much longer command challenge.

With a complexity rating of 4 out of 10 and a solitaire suitability rating of 10 out of 10, Atlantic Sentinels focuses on accessible but demanding convoy decisions. It can also integrate with The Hunters for players who wish to combine the two games.
