About this board game
Kiev ’41 is a 1–2 player wargame about Army Group South’s 1941 offensive, with games lasting around 120 minutes. Players command German or Soviet forces across the southern front of Operation Barbarossa, using colourful wooden blocks to represent the formations involved.
The campaign covers the struggle for the Ukraine, Donbass, Crimea, and Caucasus. The Axis player takes the role of the primary attacker, while the Soviet player must withstand the advance, seek opportunities for powerful counterattacks, and potentially win the game early.
Based on the core game engine of Moscow ’41, Kiev ’41 adapts its systems to the distinct conditions of the south. Headquarters units and an impulse system model the command and control challenges of the period, limiting how much armies can move and fight while keeping the action flowing.
- Historical orders of battle and wartime challenges
- Variable setup and reinforcements for changing scenarios
- Axis Corps and Divisions, plus Soviet Armies, Corps, and Divisions
- A map scale of 1:1,000,000, with 1 cm representing 10 km
- One turn represents one month
Historically, Kiev held out for three months, and the Soviet resistance along the Dnieper helped prompt Hitler’s diversion of Guderian from Moscow. The resulting encirclement was the largest in history, but it did not deliver the decisive victory Germany sought.
In Kiev ’41, historical forces and objectives provide the framework, but player decisions can change the course of the campaign. With excellent solitaire suitability, it offers a focused way to explore the southern front’s operational challenges.
