About this board game

Torii is a two-player abstract game in which playful spirits move across a village, spread their followers, and build magnificent Torii gates. Designed for a listed play time of 30 minutes, it is also described as a breezily fresh experience that can be played in 10–20 minutes.

In the world of Torii, sprightly spirits appear from time to time, bringing miracles and helping the village flourish through their harmless pranks. As villagers become followers, Torii gates are erected so people can worship the spirits and express their gratitude.

Each player controls one of two playful spirits. On a turn, choose an action tile to move 1, 2, or 3 steps, then spread your followers. When followers form a line, a Torii is built. The central challenge is that the two spirits can never see each other: each must jump over the line where the other spirit is present.

  • Players: 2
  • Play style: abstract head-to-head strategy
  • Movement: action tiles allow 1, 2, or 3 steps
  • Components: a dual-layer board and wooden Torii gates
  • Replayability: six spirits per player provide a unique experience each game

Plan your moves ahead to block the opposing spirit from reaching the spaces they want, or move experimentally and watch how the other player reacts. The hidden relationship between the spirits’ positions makes every decision a test of timing, positioning, and anticipation.

With its compact play time, distinctive movement rule, dual-layer board, and wooden gates, Torii offers a fresh contest for two players. Choose your spirit, spread your followers, and find the right moment to shape the village.
