About this board game

Constantinople is a solitaire wargame for one player covering the Byzantine, or Later Roman, Empire during the late 7th and early 8th centuries.

The game focuses on the era of the two Barbarian sieges of the great City of Constantinople, in AD 672 and 717. You control Byzantine and allied forces, while the game system directs a range of barbarian powers threatening the empire.

Each turn represents a campaign season lasting from three months to a year. Ground units represent 10,000 to 30,000 soldiers or warriors, while each hex on the map covers approximately 55 miles. Fortresses represent individual great fortresses, and towns represent larger settled areas.

To prevail, you must defeat the Barbarians while expanding Byzantine power. The opposing forces include several caliphates, the Khazar Khanate, the Bulgar Kingdom, Slavic Tribes, and the Lombard Kingdom.

  • Caliphates of Egypt, Syria, and Mosul
  • Khazar Khanate and Bulgar Kingdom
  • Slavic Tribes and Lombard Kingdom
  • Byzantine and allied forces under the player’s control

Released in 2019, Constantinople presents its historical campaign in a compact magazine game format. The game includes one 22-by-34-inch map and 176 counters, and was published in Strategy & Tactics #318.
