About this board game

Jungle is a two-player traditional Chinese strategy game that plays in about 20 minutes. Also known as Animal Chess, it challenges each player to move eight animals across the board and enter the opponent’s den.

Animals move one square at a time, and strength matters: stronger animals can eat weaker ones. Yet Jungle gives smaller creatures surprising opportunities. The rat can defeat the elephant by crawling into its ear, creating a memorable tactical twist.

The board’s special spaces add variety to every contest. A river is navigable only by the rat, while the lion and tiger can leap across it. Pitfalls make all animals vulnerable to attacks from weaker opponents, so positioning is just as important as raw strength.

  • Players: 2
  • Play time: about 20 minutes
  • Objective: enter the opponent’s den
  • Key features: animal strength, a river, leaping lions and tigers, and weakening pitfalls

With straightforward movement and a compact objective, the game is accessible to young children while still offering room for tactical decisions. Players must judge when to advance, when to protect their stronger animals, and how to use the river and pitfalls to their advantage.

Jungle is not intended as a deep intellectual exercise, but its mix of familiar animals, simple rules, and unexpected reversals makes it an enjoyable strategic game for casual play and family audiences.
