About this board game

MedFront: War in North Africa 1940-43 is a two-player war game with an approximately 180-minute play time, covering the Allied and German conflict in North Africa from 1940 to 1943 and the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939.

Players must manage more than battlefield movement. Production, supply, command control, and weather all shape the struggle as each side attempts to break the opposing lines and achieve victory.

  • Detailed card map of Spain and North Africa
  • Wooden blocks representing military units
  • Fog of war created by concealed unit information
  • Rotating blocks that track current strength

MedFront uses the Columbia Games Block system. Instead of traditional counters, upright wooden blocks conceal unit details from an opponent, creating uncertainty that can be challenged through memory and battlefield information. Rotating a block places its current strength at the top, while the blocks’ four sides allow more strength steps than counters with only two sides.

This system adds depth without requiring complex layers of bookkeeping, supporting engaging sessions that remain relatively short for a detailed war game. The physical presentation is a major feature, combining the large map of Spain and North Africa with numerous wooden unit blocks.

MedFront is one portion of the complete EuroFront series, which covers the European conflict of World War II. WestFront II: The War in Europe 1943-45 – Second Edition includes updated MedFront maps and some Spanish units, while EuroFront: The War in Europe, 1936-45 – Second Edition includes updated MedFront rules, the Spanish Civil War scenario, and other Spanish units.
