About this board game

Lords of the Spanish Main is a board game for 2–8 players, with play taking about 120 minutes. Set in the year 1600, it challenges each player, representing a historical individual, to make a fortune in the Spanish Main.

Across each yearly turn, players bid on properties and slaves, establish colonies, and maneuver their ships for trade or piracy. The game also allows almost any negotiation or deal between players, making agreements and rivalries an important part of the pursuit of wealth.

  • Bid upon properties and slaves
  • Establish colonies
  • Maneuver ships for trade or piracy
  • Negotiate and make deals with other players

One player takes the role of the Marqués de Guadalcazar, the Spanish governor of Española. He is not averse to dealing in contraband goods with the merchant fleets controlled by the other players.

In 1605, the treasure player—usually the Marqués—sails the first treasure flotilla. The voyage may use the treasure player’s own fleet or a contracted foreign one. If the flotilla successfully avoids the other players’ pirates, the treasure is divided among the collaborators according to their agreement.

In Lords of the Spanish Main, every yearly turn offers opportunities to expand, trade, raid, and bargain. The winner is the player who finishes with the greatest amount of gold and treasure.
