About this board game

TOKAN is a tactical skill game for exactly two players, with games lasting about 20 minutes. Each side leads a team of lions, jackals, and mice across a game field that changes as play unfolds.

The animals meet randomly, and victory depends on using their tactical abilities effectively. TOKAN centers on a distinctive way of winning: instead of taking a piece away, players cover it. This creates stacks whose visible top piece reveals the owner, while every piece beneath it has been “gobbled up.”

The animal hierarchy does not always behave as expected. In the world of TOKAN, even the mouse can eat the lion, adding an unlikely possibility to the tactical decisions made throughout the game. Only the smartest creatures will survive.

  • Players: 2
  • Playing time: approximately 20 minutes
  • Teams: lions, jackals, and mice for each side
  • Core mechanic: cover pieces to form stacks rather than simply removing them

With random animal encounters, a changing game field, and a covering system that determines which side is revealed, TOKAN presents a compact contest of tactical judgment. Every meeting between the animals can matter, especially when the smallest creature has the power to consume the largest.

Released in 2022, TOKAN is built around a simple central idea with an unusual twist: survival belongs not necessarily to the strongest animal, but to the player who makes the smartest tactical choices.
