About this board game
The Hobbit Adventure Boardgame is a 2–4 player fantasy adventure game from 1994, with an approximately 90-minute playing time. Each player takes the role of a hobbit travelling across northwestern Middle-earth in search of the experience, equipment, and information needed to defeat the Dragon at Carn Dûm.
Players unfold a full-color mounted mapboard and begin a journey filled with exploration and discovery. Along the way, hobbits can visit sites, battle monsters, uncover treasure, acquire artifacts, and challenge opponents with tricky riddles. The goal is to become strong enough to travel north to Angmar and be the first halfling to defeat the Dragon and secure its great hoard.
The game combines movement, combat, cards, money, life points, and talisman rings. Its 142 cards are divided among eight categories, creating a broad supply of dangers, rewards, encounters, and equipment for the journey.
- Adventure: 36 cards for the central journey across Middle-earth
- Equipment: 31 cards, alongside Magic, Money, Rest, Peril, Danger, and Riddle cards
- Dice and markers: three custom red combat dice, an illustrated blue movement die, a green six-sided die, money markers, and life markers
- Player pieces: four differently colored plastic Hobbits and 16 talisman rings in four colors
Designed for a relatively light experience, The Hobbit Adventure Boardgame focuses on travelling around the map while collecting what is needed for the final confrontation. Its mounted board, colorful cards, and plastic Hobbit figures give the journey a distinctive presentation, while the riddle challenges add opportunities to confront fellow players on the road to Carn Dûm.
