About this board game

Red Steel: Clash of Armor at Kishinev is a two-player historical wargame with an approximately 120-minute playing time, depicting the July 1941 tank battle between Soviet and Axis forces outside Kishinev, the capital of Bessarabia.

In early July 1941, the Romanian army crossed the Prut River into the Soviet Union to recapture the lost province of Basarabia. The resulting battle brought the Romanian Royal Armored Division and other units into conflict with elements of three Soviet tank divisions, including several battalions equipped with the feared T-34.

The game presents this swirling armored engagement at a scale designed to cover both the battlefield and the formations involved. Each game turn represents six hours, while each hex represents 1.2 miles, or 2.0 kilometers. Units range from companies to divisions, placing the action within a broad operational framework.

Red Steel gives players the opportunity to relive the fight through a large map, hundreds of unit counters, and dedicated rules for scenarios and advanced play. The physical game includes:

  • One 24 × 29-inch map
  • Two dual-sided countersheets with 560 half-inch counters
  • An 8-page rules booklet
  • An 8-page scenario and advanced-rules booklet
  • Three one-sided player-aid cards

With its focus on the July 1941 armored clash near Kishinev, the game places Romanian and Soviet forces at the center of a campaign shaped by the struggle for Basarabia. Its company-to-division scale and six-hour turns support a substantial battlefield simulation in a compact two-player experience.
