About this board game
Drive on Moscow: Operation Typhoon, 1941 is a two-player strategic simulation of Germany’s final 1941 attempt to capture the Soviet capital, with a listed play time of 240 minutes.
The game covers the campaign from 1 October through 7 December 1941, although play can end earlier if either player concedes. Each turn represents one week, while every hex covers 7.5 miles, or 12 kilometers, from side to opposite side.
The German player is generally on the offensive, seeking victory by isolating or capturing Moscow or by seizing all the other key cities on the map. The Soviet player primarily defends but must also launch local counterattacks to resist the advance and protect vital positions.
Units are mainly divisions, supported by brigades and one elite super-elite regiment. German air superiority during much of the campaign is represented through the game’s movement and combat rules, creating a focused operational contest without requiring a high-complexity rules system.
- Scale: weekly turns and 7.5-mile hexes
- Forces: brigades through divisions, plus one elite regiment
- Components: two full-color 22 × 34-inch maps, 352 counters, and a 16-page rulebook
- Solitaire playability: high
Using a derivation of the system from Drive on Stalingrad, 2nd edition, Drive on Moscow offers a low-to-intermediate complexity experience for two players. Published play information lists a 4–15 hour playing range, and players supply one six-sided die.
