About this board game
Bouba/Kiki is a cooperative communication game for 3–8 players, with a play time of about 45 minutes. Based on the psychological Bouba/Kiki Effect, it explores how people tend to associate certain sounds with particular shapes, regardless of language or culture.
Each card shows a nonsense word on one side and a simple illustration on the other. In the basic game, players are presented with three words and one shape, then decide which word fits that shape best. Points are earned when teammates independently choose the same target.
The game’s central challenge is simple to understand but opens up a fascinating communication puzzle: can your group make the same connection between an unfamiliar sound and a visual form? A rounded shape may suggest “bouba,” while a spiky shape may suggest “kiki,” but every decision invites the table to compare its shared instincts.
Bouba/Kiki includes six scenarios, each with five missions that gradually increase in difficulty and complexity. Together, they expand the core idea into different communication-based settings, giving groups new contexts in which to interpret, discuss, and align their choices.
- Cooperative play focused on shared associations
- Nonsense-word and shape-matching challenges
- Six scenarios with five missions each
- Settings including alien contact, spirit mediums, and toddlers at a nursery
Released in 2025, the game turns a notable psychological effect into a group experience about perception, communication, and finding common ground.
