About this board game
Chalons: The Fate of Europe is a 1–2-player board game that recreates the Battle of Chalons, where Flavius Aetius’s remnant Roman army challenged Attila’s Huns on the Catalaunian Plain. Designed for a play time of about 60 minutes, it presents a pivotal mid-5th-century conflict in which the outcome would decide the fate of Europe.
Chalons uses the Battles of the Ancient World system to provide a simple yet accurate portrayal of ancient warfare. Its intuitive combat rules represent the features of sword-and-shield warfare, with units including swordsmen, archers, javelin throwers, and horsemen. Victory depends on deployment, maneuver, opportunity, and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each army.
The game’s traditional Combat Results Table emphasizes playability while modeling the strictures of ancient combat. Leaders such as Attila influence battles, making their presence an important factor. Players must also account for charges, melee, diversionary attacks, and demoralization as armies attempt to break through opposing lines.
- Mounted Huns and their powerful composite bows
- Roman and barbarian forces with varied unit capabilities
- Rules for leaders, charges, melee, diversionary attacks, and demoralization
- Tactical opportunities involving javelins, ballistas, and disrupted charges
In Chalons, a barbarian charge against a phalanx may be complicated by javelins thrown before contact—or by ballistas concealed behind enemy ranks. The included 17 x 22-inch terrain map and 100 die-cut counters support the battlefield action, while a Standard Rules booklet and an Exclusive Rules booklet provide the game’s rules.
