About this board game
A Mighty Fortress is a six-player historical strategy game with an approximately 240-minute playing time, recreating the Reformation and Counter-Reformation in Europe from 1532 to 1555.
Each player represents one of six major powers: England, France, the Ottoman Empire, the Hapsburgs, the Pope, or the collection of German states known as the Lutherans. The Lutheran player seeks to spread the Protestant cause, while the Papacy works to bring nations back into the Catholic fold.
The Hapsburgs command the largest number of combat forces, but their widespread possessions face pressure from every direction. France seeks to dismantle Hapsburg dominions, Henry VIII confronts the Pope in England, and Suleiman the Magnificent watches for opportunities to expand the Ottoman Empire. These competing goals create a constantly changing political landscape in which yesterday’s ally may become today’s opponent.
Military activity is only part of the struggle. Players negotiate and maneuver through formal alliances, peace treaties, truces, ultimata, and territorial concessions, while religious influence spreads through missionaries, conversion, and theological debates. Excommunication, taxation, income, borrowing, and Henry VIII’s divorce add further historical and political complications.
- Six asymmetrical major powers with distinct historical objectives
- Military conflict combined with diplomacy and religious competition
- Rules for missionaries, conversion, excommunication, treaties, and alliances
- Hidden, variable victory conditions that keep priorities uncertain
Covering the turbulent years leading from the Schmalkaldic League to the Peace of Augsburg, A Mighty Fortress presents a detailed simulation of shifting power, religious fervor, and relentless negotiation. Its 200 counters support a broad political and military contest in which no faction can safely ignore the others.
