About this board game

Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea is a thematic exploration game for 1–5 players, offering a compact 45-minute journey aboard Captain Nemo’s submarine, the Nautilus. Inspired by Jules Verne’s classic novel, it combines discovery, danger, and spatial strategy across a double-sided map.

The game unfolds over sixteen simultaneous turns. Each round, players secretly choose one of three character rows, then use the indicated movement points to navigate the Nautilus. Players record discoveries on their sheets while seeking opportunities across both surface and depth maps.

  • Draw discoveries and score islands in line of sight.
  • Explore sunken ships, seaweed forests, treasures, and the mysteries of Atlantis.
  • Hunt marine creatures and score captured cetaceans.
  • Use unique character bonuses to shape your decisions.

When multiple players select the same character, a hazard is triggered. The rotating Conseil card can provide temporary immunity, adding another layer of timing and tactical choice to each turn.

Choosing when to dive or surface is central to the experience, as the double-sided map system invites players to shift between different levels of the journey. Thoughtful planning and tactical movement help turn discoveries into points while revealing the wonders and dangers of the sea.

With layered end-game scoring and a dedicated solo mode, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea offers replayable exploration for groups and solo adventurers alike. Its elegant structure brings the Nautilus, Atlantis, sunken ships, and oceanic mysteries together in an immersive board game experience.
