About this board game
Quantum is an abstract strategy game for 2–4 players with an approximately 20-minute playing time, released in 1984. It combines a random setup with concealed information and two straightforward game objectives.
Before play begins, the mahogany frame is shaken until its weighted pieces fall into place. Most pieces initially show their blank side, so their movement abilities remain unknown until they are overturned.
When revealed, a piece may move one square at a time or travel an unlimited number of squares, like a queen in Chess. Discovering which pieces have which abilities is central to understanding the changing position on the board.
The included games offer two different goals:
- Connect opposite sides of the board.
- Control the four center squares.
In addition to the hidden movement information, Quantum includes certain special moves that can dramatically alter gameplay. These unexpected possibilities give the simple objectives a shifting tactical character as pieces are revealed and positions change.
With its unusual weighted-piece setup, mahogany frame, and mysterious movement capabilities, Quantum presents a distinctive abstract strategy experience. The random starting arrangement ensures that the board begins from a setup produced by the physical components, while the two included games provide clear ways to approach play.
