About this board game
Clans is a board game for 2–4 players, with games lasting about 30 minutes. Each player is secretly assigned one of five colors and tries to score as many points as possible for that color without revealing their identity.
The board contains 12 regions, each divided into five areas. Every area features one of four terrain types and receives one hut in each of the five colors. On a turn, a player moves all the huts from one area containing fewer than seven huts into an adjacent occupied area, carefully balancing progress with the need to keep their color hidden.
Movement can cause areas to become completely surrounded by empty areas. When that happens, one or more areas are scored. If all five colors are present in a scoring, any color represented by only one hut is removed, creating an additional consideration when groups come together.
- Hidden identities: Your scoring color is selected randomly and kept secret until the game ends.
- Area movement: Move an entire group from an eligible area to an adjacent occupied area.
- Changing scoring value: Terrain types receive different bonuses or penalties as the epoch track advances.
- Endgame reveal: Once at least 12 areas have scored, everyone reveals their color.
The epoch track limits how many areas can score before the game finishes. Each scoring advances the track, and the current section determines how the terrain involved affects the result; some scorings earn bonuses, while others may score nothing.
In Clans, every move can influence the board, the scoring schedule, and what other players believe about your hidden color. The winner is the player whose color has earned the most points while remaining concealed until the final reveal.
