About this board game
Abalone is a two-player marble-pushing game with an approximately 30-minute playing time, first released in 1987. Players compete to push six of their opponent’s marbles off a beautiful, functional board.
On each turn, players move marbles around the board and seek advantageous positions. The central mechanic is the relative weight of marbles arranged in a line: a group’s pushing strength is determined by the number of marbles in that line. To move an opposing column along its axis, a player must use a heavier group.
This creates a constant balance between attack and defense. With six possible directions of movement, it is difficult to protect every position perfectly, so each push can change the shape of the contest and open new opportunities.
- Players: 2
- Playing time: 30 minutes
- Goal: Push six opposing marbles off the board
- Core mechanic: Use a heavier line of marbles to push a lighter opposing column
Abalone is designed around large marbles and direct positional play, giving every movement a visible effect on the board. The game can also accommodate up to six players when supplemental marble sets are purchased, expanding the contest beyond its standard two-player format.
Recognized as a winner of the 1988 Concours International de Créateurs de Jeux de Société, Abalone combines an accessible objective with challenging spatial decisions. Players must judge when to build strength, when to push, and how to avoid leaving their own marbles vulnerable.
