About this board game

Hoity Toity is a 1990 card game for 2–5 players, with an approximate playing time of 45 minutes. Designed by Klaus Teuber, this Spiel des Jahres winner invites players to pursue the refined hobby of collecting old junk.

Players acquire various pieces of junk represented by cards, either buying them or stealing them from their opponents. The goal is to assemble the largest and oldest collection, turning ordinary discarded objects into a source of noble prestige.

  • Collect cards representing pieces of old junk.
  • Choose between different actions each turn.
  • Use a rock-paper-scissors-style mechanism to compete with opponents.
  • Try to predict what other players will do before decisions are revealed.

Every turn presents players with a couple of choices, but the best option is rarely obvious. Success depends on reading the table, guessing what your opponents are likely to attempt, and planning your own decision accordingly.

The game’s central tension comes from uncertainty: you do not know for certain whether your choice was correct until everyone’s decision has been revealed. A clever plan can secure valuable junk, while a poorly judged prediction may leave your collection behind.

With its simple competing-choice system and emphasis on anticipation, Hoity Toity turns collecting into a game of observation and calculated risk. It offers a concise contest in which every decision can affect the race for the most impressive collection.
