About this board game

Tokaido Duo is a two-player board game with a 30-minute play time, inviting travelers to explore Japan’s island of Shikoku through three unique characters.

Inspired by Tokaido but built around completely new mechanisms, the game uses a quick dice draft each turn. Use the results to steer the pilgrim, merchant, and artist along their different tracks, discovering opportunities as you race to complete one of their jobs.

• The pilgrim visits shrines, gardens, seashores, and hot springs.
• The merchant collects and sells traditional souvenirs.
• The artist paints beautiful vistas and gifts paintings to local people.

Each character offers a distinct way to experience the journey and gain points. Rather than simply rushing from one destination to the next, you’ll pursue discoveries through the roles’ different activities while enjoying the scenery of Japan’s smallest main island.

Tokaido Duo is a standalone game, so its new mechanisms and character-focused journey offer a fresh experience inspired by the original Tokaido. The Stonemaier Games version also includes character guides for each player, helping travelers follow their unique paths around Shikoku.

For solo players, this edition includes an Automa solo mode. The Automa mode is also available separately for players who already own Tokaido Duo, making the scenic journey accessible whether you are traveling with another player or on your own.
