About this board game

Pente is an abstract strategy game for 2–4 players that plays in about 30 minutes. Players place glass markers on the intersections of a 19-by-19 grid, creating a tense contest of positioning, threats, and captures.

The main objective is to be the first to achieve one of two winning conditions: make a line of five of your own markers or capture five pairs of your opponent’s pieces. In games with more than two players, the line-making goal is reduced to four markers in a row.

Capturing is central to Pente’s identity. A capture occurs when exactly two opposing pieces are sandwiched between pieces of the opposite color. This gives players more than one way to pursue victory and makes every placement relevant to both attack and defense.

  • Grid: A 19-by-19 board with markers placed on intersections.
  • Winning goals: Create a line of five, or capture five pairs.
  • Multiplayer adjustment: Games with more than two players use four in a row as the line goal.
  • Variations: Multiple versions offer greater challenge and complexity.

The 20th Anniversary Edition is a deluxe version featuring a large, full-color instruction book, a quality game board, and six sets of differently colored glass markers. These components allow play with up to six players, while the listed standard player count is 2–4.

With its combination of five-in-a-row planning and sandwich captures, Pente offers a distinct alternative to related games such as Go-Moku and Renju. It is a focused, accessible abstract game where each move can advance a winning line, threaten a capture, or prevent an opponent’s breakthrough.
