About this board game

Iron Dragon is a fantasy railroad game for 2–6 players, with sessions lasting about 240 minutes. Released in 1994, it uses the Empire Builder system to turn rail network construction, delivery contracts, and money management into an adventure across a world of elves, cat-people, trolls, magic, and genetically engineered dragons.

Players use erasable crayons to draw their rail lines directly on a special game board. Those routes become working infrastructure for picking up and delivering commodities, with payouts determined by cards. Build connections between cities, explore underground territory, and expand your network while seeking to create an extensive and profitable rail empire.

The fantasy setting adds new tools and challenges to the classic crayon rail format. Foremen reduce terrain-building or river-crossing costs according to their race: elves provide discounts in forests, dwarves in mountains, and others are associated with their own terrain advantages.

  • Ships let trains cross the sea between continents.
  • Ships can also avoid land bottlenecks or connect two otherwise unconnected rail networks.
  • Regional resources are strongly specialized, reflecting the backstory of each area.
  • Players must manage routes, commodities, construction costs, and payouts as they expand.

Dangerous and unexplored territory gives every new connection a sense of discovery, while the segregated regional resources encourage players to think carefully about where their lines should go. Forest creatures, rivers, mountains, seas, and underground routes all shape the choices involved in building.

With its combination of classic railroad strategy and an elaborate fantasy setting, Iron Dragon offers a distinctive take on rail empire building for family and friends.
