About this board game

Crusader Rex is a two-player block war game of the Third Crusade, with approximately 180 minutes of play focused on controlling key cities in the Middle East.

One player commands the Christian Franks, seeking to take back the Holy Land. The other leads the Muslim Saracens, attempting to retain it. The objective centers on important Victory Cities, including Jerusalem, Acre, Damascus, and Antioch.

The map stretches from Antioch in the north to Egypt in the south, creating a focused setting for this struggle. Its historical theme brings the era to life through figures such as Richard the Lionheart, Philip II of France, and the 67-year-old Frederick I Barbarossa of Germania, while Saladin leads the Saracen side.

Crusader Rex plays somewhat like other Columbia block war games, while adding distinctive rules and options that reflect the character of the period. These features give the conflict its own historical flavor:

  • Siege warfare for battles around fortified locations
  • Knight charges that highlight the power of the crusading armies
  • H 견arying and muster moves that shape movement and pressure across the map
  • Freedom in setup, allowing the game to begin with varied strategic possibilities

Whether you play the Franks and try to hold out until powerful crusaders arrive, or take the role of Saladin and attempt to repeat history, the game combines an accessible regional objective with a strongly themed historical conflict. Released in 2005, it offers an engaging contest over the cities and lands of the Third Crusade.
