Bruges: The City on the Zwin

About this expansion

Bruges: The City on the Zwin is an expansion for Bruges that supports 2–5 players and a play time of about 60 minutes. Released in 2014, it adds several modules that can be used individually or combined to expand the base game.

The expansion introduces components for a fifth player, including a separate board showing the canal on which that player builds. Its additional character cards also enlarge the card deck, so not all cards will be in play as in the original game. These cards belong to a new guild, and some of their powers match abilities from the base game.

New character abilities also add fresh possibilities, including the ability to dig through the discard pile and bring characters back into play. Another module adds a stack of stock cards, each with a special power that modifies existing actions. Only one stock is active at a time, beginning with five or six scroll counters; each use removes a counter, and a new stock enters play when the final counter is gone.

Whenever a 3 or 4 is rolled at the start of a round, a ship of the matching color is placed on the supplemental board. As an extra action, a player can discard a worker of the appropriate color, reveal the matching ship, and take its depicted action, such as advancing on the influence track or reusing a one-time character power.

Bruges: The City on the Zwin also includes statues with values of 8 and 9, providing more incentive to complete canals, along with a revised Engraver card that replaces the one from the base game.
