About this expansion

Five Tribes: The Thieves of Naqala is a mini-expansion for 2–4 players that adds a disruptive new element to Five Tribes, with an approximately 80-minute play time. Released in 2016, it introduces six thief cards and one new djinn.

At the start of the game, reveal one thief card at random. The thief cards are associated with the different tribes, creating fresh opportunities to turn tribal actions against your rivals. Whenever someone would buy a djinn, they may instead purchase the available thief card for the same price as that djinn.

When you take an action with the tribe associated with your thief, you can choose to activate and discard that thief. Everyone else must then get rid of something, potentially including two resource cards, one tile they control, a djinn, or a palace.

  • Six thief cards: Each is linked to one of the tribes.
  • One new djinn: Shuffle it into the deck with the other djinns; it protects you from the effects of thieves.
  • A valuable payoff: After other players discard, choose something to keep from all the discarded items.

The expansion’s thief mechanism creates a pointed choice: spend the thief when its tribe is active to force opponents to surrender something useful, then take advantage of what they lose. Meanwhile, the protective djinn offers a way to guard against these effects.

With its compact set of cards and a single djinn, Five Tribes: The Thieves of Naqala adds a direct source of rivalry and a new reason to watch which tribes are being activated.
