Catan Scenarios: Helpers of Catan

About this expansion

Catan Scenarios: Helpers of Catan is a mini-expansion for 3–6 players, with an approximate play time of 90 minutes. Released in 2010, it adds ten character cards to Catan, each offering a different special ability.

The cards give players new tactical options during the game. Each character can be used once or twice before being traded for another, but a player must use the current card’s ability before turning it in. This creates an ongoing decision: make the most of a useful helper now, or choose when to move on to a different power.

As each player builds their second settlement, they receive a specific character card based on player order. The cards’ approximate utility increases to help counter the advantage of acting earlier, adding another strategic consideration to the settlement race.

For example, Marianne lets you take any one resource card if you rolled something other than a 7 but did not receive resources from that roll. Players may also choose which card to take, giving the helper system an additional layer of strategy.
